Today I have been refitting my kitchen and carving the classical neck, it can get a bit confusing, I nearly ended up with a cupboard shaped guitar neck.
Carving a neck from a block of wood is probably the most satisfying part of making a guitar, just me, a chisel and imagination. It takes quite a bit of imagination just working out how to clamp a partially carved neck to the table/workbench, as can be seen here.
I must admit I have become quite adept at clamping down various shaped pieces of wood with just four sash clamps. The neck is starting to look like a classical neck now. I am already thinking about the headstock and how I can make it look “awesome” as my son would say. I am sure to come up with something reasonably unique.
The first guitar I made got knocked over today and landed on a hard surface headstock first! Yep it broke the headstock off from the neck. It was no big deal though, I have repaired it and the repair is totally invisible and stronger than it was. Repairing a guitar is a lot easier to do after making a few guitars, knowing how the guitar is put together makes repairing breakages more obvious.
Just pushed the neck and fret board together with the sound box to give some idea of what it is going to look like.
Now I think I will lay back and relax with a good book to read, a pretty good day all-in-all.
