The neck.

I have glued the headstock section to the neck now. I have always tried to make this cut and glue joint as accurate as I can. This time I have made sure there is plenty of wood to sand away so I could be a little sloppy with the cut and glue procedure. I figure I can get it nice and true by cutting/sanding now.
I also placed the fingerboard in the picture because I will be doing that as I do the neck. I need to reduce the fingerboard thickness down to about 6 or 7 millimeters.
Because the sound box is complete this leaves me with a limited amount of ways to fix the neck to the body. I think I am going to do a dovetail joint, the local luthier expert recommends it so I will give it a go. I do have a dovetail bit for my router but I think I will practice the dovetail first, this sound box is probably the best sound box I have made and I do not want to ruin it.

That is all for today, need to let the joint dry for a whole day before reducing and shaping the head stock.

I’m back……

After almost two months I have started on the maple neck for Laura’s classical guitar. The sound box is without doubt the best sound box I have made so far. All I have done today is to make the cut between neck and headstock.
I will not be working on this guitar every day but at least a few days per week.
Being as the sound box came out so well I will be taking it slow on the neck, I would really like this guitar to be the best one made so far.
No pictures today.

The sound box.

I decided to put a rosewood strip down the length of the back and it came out pretty good. Bracing the back and adding the rosewood strip took 3 hours, To glue the front and back to the sides – complete the sound box – took 5 hours. The reason all the times are in complete hours is because I am rounding up the times to the complete hour.

As can be seen I am using a couple of heavy weights and a strip of wood to hold the rosewood strip into place while the glues dries.

For the first time I am using the mould to glue the front and back to the sides. The clothes pegs make excellent little wedges for the job as can be seen in the picture below.

This is the best sound box I have made so far, it is dimensionally correct and that is due to the mould.
